Full Biography

Aaliyah Dana Haughton, known professionally as Aaliyah, was born on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She began her career at an early age, appearing on Star Search and performing with Gladys Knight. At age 12, she signed with Jive Records and Blackground Records, working with R. Kelly on her debut album 'Age Ain't Nothing but a Number'. The album was a success, selling three million copies in the U.S. After facing allegations of an illegal marriage with Kelly, Aaliyah left Jive for Atlantic Records. Her second album, 'One in a Million', sold over eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, she appeared in her first major film, Romeo Must Die, and contributed to its soundtrack. Her third album, 'Aaliyah', was released in July 2001. Tragically, Aaliyah died on August 25, 2001, in a plane crash while filming the music video for 'Rock the Boat'. She has been credited with helping redefine R&B and hip hop, earning her the nickname 'Princess of R&B'.
