In October 1970, American college student Billy Hayes attempts to smuggle two kilos of hashish out of Turkey by strapping it to his body while trying to board a flight back home with his girlfriend. He is arrested and initially sentenced to over four years for possession, but the prison environment proves harsh due to sadistic guard Hamidou's torture tactics. Despite being warned not to trust anyone, Billy befriends fellow inmates Jimmy Booth, Erich, and Max. When his legal appeals fail and Billy becomes desperate, he considers Max's advice to 'catch the midnight express' - escape.
'Midnight Express', directed by Alan Parker in 1978, is a biographical thriller based on American Billy Hayes' real-life experience smuggling hashish out of Turkey. The film focuses on Hayes' subsequent imprisonment and harsh treatment at the hands of Turkish authorities, highlighting the brutal conditions he faces while trying to secure his release through legal means.
