Set in 1774, shortly before the French Revolution and somewhere between Potsdam and Berlin, 'Liberté' follows Madame de Dumeval, Duke de Tesis, and Duke de Wand - libertines expelled from the puritanical court of Louis XVI. They embark on a mission to seek support from the legendary German seducer and freethinker, Duke de Walchen. Their aim is twofold: to export libertinage, an enlightenment philosophy rejecting moral boundaries and authorities, and to find a safe haven where they can pursue their pleasure-driven games without legal restraints.
Directed by Albert Serra in 2019, 'Liberté' is a historical drama exploring themes of sexuality, freedom, and the pursuit of pleasure. Set amidst the political tumult preceding the French Revolution, the film follows libertines seeking sanctuary in Germany to indulge their desires without societal constraints. The movie juxtaposes the hypocrisy of contemporary society with its characters' philosophical beliefs, questioning moral boundaries and authorities.
