The story unfolds in Loire with the middle-class Lelievre family. Philippe, who dotes on his mother, has two sisters and a wealthy ex-divorcee neighbor named Gérard. After Gérard ends his relationship with Philippe's mother, Philippe takes back a stone head of Flora from Gérard's garden that was originally given to him by his mother. At the wedding of one of his sisters, Philippe meets Senta, an eccentric young woman whom he quickly falls in love with despite her odd behavior and his initial reservations. Senta proposes a plan for them to prove their love, involving poetry, tree planting, and murder. The narrative then follows Philippe's struggle with this unsettling proposition.
La demoiselle d'honneur (The Maid) is a psychological thriller directed by Claude Chabrol in 2004. Set among the middle class of Loire, it explores themes of obsession, love, and manipulation through the lens of Philippe's relationship with Senta. The film blurs the lines between romance and thriller, as Philippe grapples with his growing attachment to Senta amidst her disturbing plans.
