In 1937 Los Angeles, private investigator Jake 'J.J.' Gittes takes on a case to investigate Hollis Mulwray's infidelity at the behest of his wife, Evelyn. During his surveillance, Gittes witnesses Mulwray opposing plans for constructing a new dam during a drought and meeting with an unknown woman. When news leaks about their supposed affair, Mulwray is found dead in apparent suicide. Digging deeper into the case, Gittes uncovers secrets surrounding Noah Cross, Evelyn's father and former business partner of Mulwray. As he gets closer to the truth, Gittes becomes a target himself, leading him to the realization that the unknown woman is actually Evie, Evelyn and Noah's daughter. In the climax, Gittes confronts Noah at his home in Chinatown, where it's revealed that Noah had sexually assaulted Evie, who is now pregnant with Noah's child. The film ends with Gittes being beaten up by Noah's men, leaving him with a warning not to investigate further.
